Fun at Work

I think this is something that is overlooked by a lot of companies and Managers. There are ways to infuse a little fun into the work environment that does not affect productivity. In a lot of cases, it increases productivity. People like to get things mixed into the work day. The concepts I will discuss are not complicated or expensive.

The first to consider is theme days. Make one day a month (the last Friday is a possibility) a special day. It’s things like Hawaiian shirt day, wear pink in October for breast cancer, 70’s day and a movie theme day. There are too many options to list; these are just to start the thought process. Have everyone that participates throw $2 in a pot. Use that as a charitable donation at the end of the year. Make it a competition as well. Pick the best participant each theme day and give them a small prize (coffee card). You will be surprised how much people will get into it.

The second to consider is lunch and learn. Arrange for some information sessions during lunch hour. The sessions should be general interest items (not work related). They could be a financial planner come in, employees teaching a hobby they have or some computer skills that people may find interesting (web design, Facebook, etc). Ask the folks what they would like to see or what they can present. People will attend sessions. Surprise them one session by supplying pizza. Folks will appreciate it.

There are several little things folks can do that can help folks have some fun at work. It is easier to just list them below:

  1. Get a ping pong table and supplies
  2. Get a gaming console
  3. Start an office pool (hockey, football, golf, etc). Post periodic results
  4. For companies that work in the evening, post results of important events (Stanley Cup, Super Bowl, Elections, etc).
  5. Allow folks to listen to music

The last one to discuss is the possibility of starting a Social Committee. This group could arrange some events outside of work (golf day, paintball, etc), charitable events or any other item that will bring folks together and have some fun. This is more of a commitment from a company. Folks will need to meet periodically to discuss and plan events. In some cases, the company will be asked to front some of the expenses.

There are a lot of options to consider. I have personally been involved with these items and I have seen them make a difference in a workplace. I know some sound simple or silly, but they work. If you are looking to make a small change in your department or company in 2017, consider one of these items.
